Preparation
Preparation is key to ensuring the best outcome in bad situations. Our goal is to equip you and your family with the knowledge you need to handle disaster and danger.
Active Shooter
Do you know what to do in the event of an active shooter? The FBI website hosts a number of active shooter safety resources at fbi.gov/survive as well as their informational video “Run. Hide. Fight. – Safe in Schools.” Check out the FBI’s Active Shooter Event Quick Reference Guide below.
Emergency Planning
Disasters strike with little or no warning. You should take steps to prepare and plan for potential emergencies such as tornadoes, earthquakes, and severe weather.
As you prepare, tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities; most individuals have both specific personal needs as well as resources to assist others. You and your household, as well as others you help or rely on for assistance, should work together.
As part of tailoring your plans, consider working with others to create networks of neighbors, relatives, friends and co-workers who will assist each other in an emergency. Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, pets, or specific needs like the operation of durable medical equipment. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance.
Prepare yourself and your family for a disaster by making an emergency plan. Your emergency planning should also address the care of pets, aiding family members with access and functional needs and safely shutting off utilities.
You may also want to inquire about emergency plans at work, daycare and school. If no plans exist, consider volunteering to help create one.
Once you’ve collected this important information, gather your family members and discuss the information to put in the plan. Practice your plan at least twice a year and update it according to any issues that arise.
